Analingus
Question: My girlfriend’s ex-husband used to rim her--and she loved it. She wants me to do this for her. I’m okay with it in principle. I’m not disgusted by the thought of licking her anus. But I am concerned about the health and hygiene of it. She washes carefully and swears it’s safe. But I wonder: Is washing enough? How can I do this for her safely?
Answer: You’re right to be concerned. In addition to traces of fecal material, rimming, also known as “analingus”, can expose the rimmer to bacteria that normally populate the digestive tract (E. coli), and possibly disease-causing micro-organisms: other bacteria (Shigella and Salmonella), intestinal parasites (Giardia lamblia, and amoebas), and various viruses (hepatitis A, and HIV, the AIDS virus).
Thorough washing with soap and water may well be sufficient to minimize risk, but because you feel so concerned about the safety of rimming, here are some additional suggestions:
* Shower together. That way, you can wash her anus and anal canal to your satisfaction. In addition to increasing your peace of mind, showering together beforehand can be an enjoyable start to the sensual sharing of lovemaking.
* Consider an enema. She might use an enema or two before washing or showering with you. Enemas rinse the rectum and anal canal, removing most traces of fecal material, and many microorganisms. It’s easiest to use disposable Fleet enemas, available over the counter from pharmacies.
* During analingus, use a dental dam. Dams are think sheets of latex rubber that act as a physical barrier between her anus and your mouth. At first, they might feel awkward to use, but like condoms, with a little practice (and a sense of humor), they can be easily incorporated into analingus. Dental dams are available at pharmacies. Or buy un-lubricated condoms or latex gloves and cut them into flat sheets. In a pinch you can use plastic food wrap. To heighten her pleasure, massage a little sexual lubricant around her anus before applying the dam.
