All day I dream about sex
Question: I’m a 26-year-old guy, and I think about sex constantly. It’s not ALL I think about. I have a job and friends and live a normal life. But it’s like sex is always there in the back of my mind--and often in the front of it. I’ve been this way for years, and lately it’s been getting to me. Is this normal?
Answer: Sorry it’s getting to you, but yes, it’s normal. Being horny what seems like all the time is quite common among men, especially young men like you. Researchers at the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana compiled surveys of men's sexual thoughts. The typical teen had a sexual thought once every 5 to 10 minutes. The typical guy in his forties had one every 20-30 minutes.
Here are some suggestions for dealing with this:
* Understand that you're normal, that most men think about sex a great deal.
* Cultivate other interests and activities, preferably ones that demand concentration. Many sports and intellectual activities like reading or playing cards demand focused concentration. While involved in them, it's hard to think about much else.
* If this really bothers you, you might consider professional counseling. A therapist probably can't get you to think about sex much less, but therapy might help you understand why you have so much sexual interest and how best to cope with it.
